How to get rid of ACNE

While acne is a common problem among teens and adults alike, many acne sufferers still have many questions about the condition. By understanding what is acne, what causes it and what treatments it responds to, it can be much easier to manage and prevent breakouts. This article will cover some of the basics of acne, including the various types of acne that are diagnosed and a few of the best treatment options available.

What is Acne?

Acne occurs when follicles, also known as pores, become blocked with oil and bacteria begin to grow in the area. The result is red bumps called pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. In severe cases, pus-filled cysts can occur, which can be physically painful and more difficult to treat. Acne is most commonly seen in the adolescent years, although adult acne can occur as well. In some cases, babies and young children can even have acne breakouts.

While medical experts know that overproduction of sebum (oil) is at the root of acne breakouts. However, they do not know precisely why this overproduction process might occur. Contributing factors appear to be hormones, some medications and bacteria. Heredity is also thought to play a role in some types of acne.

There is also no known cure for acne. In many cases, the condition will diminish on its own as the person ages. However, there are effective treatment options that can address acne on many different levels. Because each person is different in the type of acne they have and the way in which they respond to treatment, it is often a case of trial and error to find the best treatment program for an individual. In some cases, a combination of treatments produces the best results.

Forms of Acne

When talking about what is acne, one must also address the various forms in which acne presents itself. Sometimes treatment is determined based on the type of acne that is present. The different acne forms are:

Comedones – These breakouts are the typical whiteheads and blackheads that are often seen with acne. They are the result of clogged pores that are filled with oil secretions, bacteria and dead skin cells.

Papules – These small, red bumps indicate that inflammation and possibly infection is present under the clogged follicle.

Pustules – When papules develop white pus at the tips, they are called pustules.

Nodules – Larger, painful lumps are formed as secretions build up underneath the pore.

Cysts – This is the most severe form of acne. The pus-filled bumps can become quite large and painful. They also require the help of medical professional to treat in most cases.

Treatment of Acne

Acne treatments vary from over the counter topical solutions to prescription medications and even cosmetic procedures in some cases. The treatment that works best for a patient will depend on the type of acne present and how the patient responds. In many cases, a combination of topical and oral medication will be used for best results. If over the counter solutions do not work, patients are encouraged to see their doctor for other treatment options.
